Our Founders
Akondo was founded by two love birds Sahil Kundu and Suppriya Das Kundu after graduating. Sahil and Suppriya has studied textile design from a prestigious central university of India, Visva-Bharati University, and that was when they met with each other. While studying design he grew a passion towards building a sustainable lifestyle heritage brand that provides authentic eco-friendly products as goal to support Indian crafts and artisans livelihood in large number. After graduating he interned at Paiwand, a sustainable brand based in Noida, which upcycles textiles to new form textiles through weaving and embroidery. Suppriya has keen interest towards Bengali 'Alpona' designs and besides being a design student is a Wellness Coach by profession and always had a passion of serving people.
Their interests and passion got aligned and eventually the idea of building a business was decided. The name 'Akondo' was accidentally coined as they were on a trip back to home from a work in the interiors of Malda, West Bengal. In a packed public transport they talked on executing the brand since they had an clear idea what the brand would be and would name it after a flower as it's a great symbol of where creation starts in nature. Suddenly after iterating many names of flowers, Sahil had a sight of a road side Crown Flower tree and it struck him so hard and made him feel different. They talked over it for days.
"Baba (his father) is a worshipper of Lord Shiva so are we, Akondo is the Lords favorite flower. We should offer the name..." He Said.
"Yes! I guess Akondo it is." She Said.
He began researching on the flower and he was surprised by learning that the flower symbolizes spreading Peace, Stability and Prosperity in society, and that they actually wanted to spread in society, for you all and for Artisans, eventually they were sure "We found our brand had taken shape, as if the story was pre-manifested." what he says.
